About this Event

What makes one self-tape win the role while another is forgotten? At this Access to Industry event, leading independent-film and television directors reveal how casting decisions are actually made. Each director presents a real self-tape from the actor who secured the part, explains exactly what caught their attention, and then shows the actor performing the role in the finished production. It is a rare opportunity to compare the audition with the final result—and to understand the instincts, preferences and creative vision behind the director’s decision. There is plenty of advice about self-taping. This comes directly from the people who say yes. Afterwards, the event becomes a relaxed industry social. Because the directors have spoken candidly about their work, the conversations are specific, informed and natural. Actors gain practical insight. Directors meet new talent. Genuine curiosity creates genuine relationships—and those relationships can create opportunities.

Inside the Event

We co-hosted a networking event in London with LIFF at the Genesis Cinema in Whitechapel, London. The event was called 'Casting Independent Film' and we brought our amazing film making friends along for our members to network with. At the event, there were some fantastic film makers that gave talks on how they cast their films, the audition process they use and even showed us some examples of successful self tapes and the clips within the movies of the actors that were selected. It was an unforgettable evening and the networking drinks went on into the night. Our aim was to show you the audition process of these wonderful film makers and give members an insight into how they cast their films and what they look for in a self tape. The second aim was to introduce members to these filmmakers so that it becomes easier to reach out to them and become part of their plans for their next films. The panel included some of the biggest names in Independent Film including: Howard Ford, Gene Felaize, Sean Cronin, Danny Patrick, Faith Elizabeth, Gulshan Singh, Sam Weeks, Kyle Titterton.
